Blood Donors Encouraged to Roll Up Their Sleeves

October 4, 2011 6:45 AM | News

Canadian Blood Services has put the call out for more donors as Thanksgiving and the holiday season approaches.

To meet hospital, 7,000 blood donations need to be made — with about 3,000 blood donation appointments still needing to be filled.

“The need for blood and blood products is constant,” said Bill Coleman, director of Donor and Clinic Services for the Prairie region. “It takes many units of blood to save a patient and since one blood donation equals one unit of blood, it can take 50 units of blood to help someone in a car accident.”

Long weekends are especially difficult for blood donations, as many people are busy with family activities.

If you can spare some time to roll up your sleeve to give, call 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) to schedule an appointment.

In Manitoba, Canadian Blood Services operates two permanent clinics — the Winnipeg Blood Donor Clinic, located at 777 William Avenue, and the Brandon Blood Donor Clinic, located at 800 Rosser Avenue in the Town Centre.
