The ground will finally be broken this morning on Gordon Bell High School’s long-awaited green space.

The land just adjacent to the school was previously owned and unoccupied by Canada Post before being sold to Manitoba Education in 2009. The 2.5-acres of land was then turned over to the Winnipeg School Division for development, along with a $1.5 million grant.

The school is aiming to raise an additional $1.5 million so that a field turf can be installed, instead of sod, and that a stage, cross country loop, prairie plant gallery and outdoor classroom can be added. Through donations and fundraising, $400,000 has been raised so far.

A ground breaking ceremony is set for 11 a.m.
