The Winnipeg Art Gallery has been recognized for creating an interactive website for a touring exhibition.
The Ontario Association of Art Galleries (OAAG) bestowed the Education Award on the WAG, along with the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and the Art Gallery of Hamilton. The award was for the website surrounding “William Kurelek: The Messenger,” in the fall of 2011.
Kurelek.ca includes high-resolution images of the more than 80 works that appeared in the exhibition, an archive of digital photographs, an audio interview with the Manitoba-raised artist William Kurelek recorded just before his death in 1977, and footage of his basement studio, as well as an educational sub-site designed for middle and high school teachers and students. The site was designed by Winnipeg’s Relish Design Studio.
“Following its appearance at the WAG and the Art Gallery of Hamilton, The Messenger wrapped up in Victoria this month, bringing the exhibition to a close, so the OAAG award is a well-timed acknowledgement of the hard work the WAG and its partners put into this project,” said WAG executive director Dr. Stephen Borys.
