The Assiniboine Park Zoo’s relocated entrance on Roblin Boulevard could see an upgrade by 2014.
To coincide with the opening of the zoo’s Journey to Churchill exhibit next year, a $3.1 million grant advance by the city is on the table for the Assiniboine Park Conservancy to spruce up the south gate.
“The Journey to Churchill will be a must-see tourist destination attracting visitors from around the world, and a real source of pride for Winnipeggers,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “We want guests to be impressed from the moment they approach the gate.”
If approved by city council, funding for the new zoo gate would be advanced in 2013, and capital grant requests in 2014, 2015 and 2016 would be reduced accordingly.
The zoo relocated its entrance to the south side of Assiniboine Park last April.
