Improvements will be made to St. Vital Memorial Park ahead of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Winnipeg Soccer Federation is receiving $900,000 from the province to convert the field from natural to synthetic grass to accommodate practices. The upgrades will improve the field’s drainage while also extending the length of the soccer season, which will benefit many Winnipeg players in the years to come.

“Families all across Winnipeg will soon see improvements to their local recreational facilities through this three-year program specifically designed to renew and improve existing infrastructure,” Premier Greg Selinger said during the announcement on Wednesday.

Selinger also said the improvements will help attract other sport events that will enhance the city’s tourism industry.

Tournament delegates are in Winnipeg today for a site visit.
