Winnipeg police are warning the public about a telephone scam surrounding unpaid taxes being owed.

Scammers begin by calling the victim and claiming to be an associate with Taxation Canada and saying a large sum of money is owed. The caller is then asked to make payment through gift cards to clear up the fictitious outstanding amount. Police say you shouldn’t engage in such a call or make payment in any form.

Winnipeg police are asking the public to discuss the scam with elderly family members of those who may fall victim to such pressure tactics.

Fraud protection tips are available on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website.
