An off-duty Winnipeg police officer was able to arrest an alleged Liquor Mart thief, despite being assaulted in the process on Sunday evening.

The officer witnessed the theft at the Liquor Mart in the 800 block of Dakota Street shortly after 5 p.m. A number of suspects had stolen a large quantity of alcohol and fled, say police.

The officer requested backup and then followed the suspects to the area of Sterling Avenue and St. Anne’s Road, where he was assaulted. Despite the attack, he was able to apprehend a male suspect before being transported to hospital, where he was treated and released.
