The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating an incident in which a man sustained serious injuries during his arrest by RCMP officers in Lake St. Martin First Nation.
RCMP notified the IIU on March 21 about the March 19 arrest, which took place around 5 p.m. Officers from the Gypsumville detachment attempted to arrest a man with an outstanding warrant for domestic violence when they found a vehicle in a ditch and saw the suspect flee on foot. He entered a residence, where a struggle ensued, and police used a Taser to subdue him.
The man was taken into custody and assessed by medics before being transported to Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern and later transferred to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. He was diagnosed with multiple facial fractures.
The IIU, which investigates serious incidents involving police, is now looking into the case. Anyone with information or video footage is asked to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
