The City of Winnipeg has launched a new AI-powered chatbot on its website to help residents access information and submit service requests more easily.

The chatbot, available 24/7 in 17 languages, is part of a pilot project aimed at improving customer service.

Residents can start a conversation by clicking the chatbot icon on any page of winnipeg.ca. The tool helps users find information and submit requests through the city’s online forms. Feedback collected at the end of each chat will be used to evaluate the pilot.

“Last year I challenged the public service to develop new tools to improve how we serve Winnipeggers, and they are delivering,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.

“This AI chatbot makes it easier to get answers, find services, and connect with the city, anytime and in multiple languages. It’s another step toward a more accessible and responsive city government.”

The chatbot is powered by Google’s Gemini AI and is one of six AI pilot projects currently underway in the city.

Editor’s note: ChrisD.ca attempted to ask the chatbot various basic questions from information already on the city’s website. The automated AI response stated it didn’t understand the question and to contact 311.
