As wildfires continue to displace communities across Manitoba, law enforcement agencies have created a safety pamphlet to help evacuees protect themselves while away from home.

Developed by the Manitoba RCMP, Winnipeg Police Service, Brandon Police Service, and Manitoba First Nations Police Service, the pamphlet includes tips and emergency contacts. It will be distributed at evacuation centres in Winnipeg, Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Dauphin, and Thompson, and will also be available online and on social media.

The resource aims to help evacuees avoid scams, exploitation, and other risks that can arise during emergencies.

“This is an extremely challenging time for all evacuees, unfortunately, we also know this presents an opportunity for criminals who want nothing more but to enrich themselves,” said Inspector Catherine Light of the Manitoba RCMP.

“This pamphlet provides very basic but also very important information that we hope will help evacuees to stay safe while living away from home.”

There are currently more than 17,000 Manitobans displaced from their homes due to wildfires, mostly in the north.
