A 38-year-old man from Pine Creek First Nation is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a paramedic and attacking a driver with a weapon during a medical transport on Monday.
Winnipegosis RCMP were called around 10:45 a.m. to assist EMS en route to a hospital in Dauphin. Paramedics reported the man, being transported by ambulance, had assaulted one of them with a pair of shears.
Police intercepted the ambulance on Highway 20, north of Winnipegosis. Despite commands to drop the weapon, the man refused and fled the ambulance while still armed. He then entered a nearby vehicle, assaulted the driver in front of a child, and had to be restrained by the officer and the vehicle’s occupants.
Police used a Taser and a 40mm impact round to subdue the man and take him into custody.
Randy Nepinak faces several charges, including assault with a weapon, robbery with an offensive weapon, and assaulting a peace officer. Two people suffered minor injuries; the child was unharmed.
The investigation is ongoing.
