Winnipeg police have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a shooting that left a woman injured following an altercation in the McMillan neighbourhood.
Police say the incident occurred last Sunday at an apartment in the 200 block of Wellington Crescent. During an argument, Machuor Machar Akau allegedly produced a handgun that discharged, striking his 25-year-old girlfriend at close range.
The victim managed to escape the building and flag down Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service members nearby, who provided emergency care before transporting her to hospital in critical condition. She remains in hospital with serious injuries.
Akau fled the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived. Police later issued a warrant for his arrest, and police located him the next day in the Southdale area. He was taken into custody without incident near Fermor Avenue and Beaverhill Road on Monday afternoon.
Akau has been charged with aggravated assault and remains in custody.
