A 37-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a Winnipeg police officer during a shoplifting arrest downtown on Tuesday.
Police say members of the foot patrol unit were conducting community engagement in the area around 6:30 p.m. when they were alerted to a suspected theft at a store in the 300 block of Portage Avenue.
Officers arrested the suspect, who allegedly threatened to harm an officer. While being placed into a police cruiser, police say the man began to struggle and kicked an officer in the head. The officer did not require medical attention.
The man is charged with assaulting a peace officer, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, and theft under $5,000. He was detained in custody.
