A man fishing at the Selkirk waterfront got an unexpected catch this week when he hooked what turned out to be a grenade.
Selkirk RCMP were notified Thursday afternoon that a possible grenade had been located at the waterfront in Selkirk. Officers responded and learned that a man who was fishing had hooked the item and removed it from the water.
The Manitoba RCMP explosives disposal unit contacted members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and members of the 17 Wing Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight attended to analyze the item. It was determined to be a training grenade from the 1950s.
No safety pin was attached to the device, and it was deemed safe to transport to a facility for disposal.
“The Manitoba RCMP reminds anyone who finds an object that appears to be an explosive device not to touch, move, or disturb it. Leave the area, go to a safe location, and contact police immediately,” authorities said in a statement.
