Manitoba Sees Tourism Boom Following World Cup

WINNIPEG — All of those U.S. licence plates you spotted driving around in June really did count for something.

Tourism is up this year — nearly 60 percent compared to last — and the province’s tourism arm couldn’t be happier.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup drew in our American friends across the border to the tune of 68,128 visitors during that month alone. That’s a 57.6 percent spike from June 2014.

Only Prince Edward Island came as close to seeing a similar tourist increase of that magnitude at 28.8 percent.

“We are very hopeful that initiatives like this one will help to build on the soccer brand in the province and that it will inspire the soccer community to show their support by their commitment to this project,” said MSA executive director Hector Vergara.

WINNIPEG — It was hard to spot a Canadian flag on Monday at Winnipeg Stadium. Actually, you really had to make an effort to find one and even squinting couldn’t quite do it.

That’s because the red, white and blue invaded the city for the first Group D match of the United States and Australia as part of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

American licence plates were filing up Pembina Highway from both the south — coming from the border — and the north, with those staying downtown or exploring other parts of the city.
