Two men are lucky to be alive after their vehicle was struck by a train Monday morning in the RM of Reynolds, Manitoba

RCMP say the crash happened at about 8:30 a.m. on Lewis Road when a 2010 Chevrolet Avalanche was travelling southbound. The vehicle had stopped at the controlled crossing, but hadn’t noticed the westbound-travelling CN freight train approaching.

The driver noticed the train as he crossed the tracks and accelerated to avoid a collision. The train hit the rear portion of the Avalanche as a result.

The 38-year-old driver and his 43-year-old male passenger were taken to hospital for minor injuries.

Police say the driver is facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act.
