It began with an attempted traffic stop at around 3 a.m. when the truck was spotted without licence plates on Sutherland Avenue in Selkirk.

The truck fled to a wooded, unmaintained trail off Highway 204, where the officer followed the 17-year-old male suspect and walked onto the trail to order him out of the vehicle.

Police say that’s when the driver accelerated towards the officer, pushing a downed tree into his leg. Police say the driver then backed up and proceeded to accelerate again, when the officer fired his gun to try and stop the suspect.

The pickup truck fled the scene and was later found abandoned.

Police later found the RM of St. Andrews teen driver and arrested him. He faces several charges and remains in custody.

The officer received minor injuries during the ordeal, but didn’t require hospitalization. The suspect wasn’t injured.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba was consulted and RCMP continues to investigate.
