There’s a famous saying that when one door closes, another opens.

In the case of downtown Winnipeg’s current real estate scene, numerous doors are closing in some of the city’s traditionally popular high-rise office towers as brand new ones prepare to open to tenants in True North Square’s 17-storey building on Hargrave Street in June.

WINNIPEG — Both towers of True North Square have hit their peaks, reaching the topping off point at 242 Hargrave and 225 Carlton.

Tower 2 on Carlton now reaches 25 storeys and follows in the footstep of its shorter sibling on Hargrave at 17 storeys, which was topped off last December.

WINNIPEG — A section of northbound Hargrave Street between St. Mary Avenue and Portage Avenue is closing Thursday morning for construction related to the True North Square project.

The closure will be in effect weekdays from 5 a.m to 3 p.m. March 8-29 to allow for construction of the pedestrian walkway over Hargrave Street.

WINNIPEG — True North Square has secured MNP LLP as its newest tenant for the downtown mixed-use retail and residential development.

The accounting, tax, and business consulting firm will occupy over two and a half floors in 242 Hargrave Street, the first of four towers to be completed at True North Square.

WINNIPEG — Some of the tenants who will fill True North Square when it opens in 2018 have been revealed.

Its slogan? Redefining the Heart of the City.

The $400 million downtown development will be home to the Sutton Place Hotel, a flagship Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Liquor Mart store, Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP law firm and the headquarters for Scotiabank.

“Our vision is to create a transformative mixed-use project that is integral to the success of downtown Winnipeg,” said Jim Ludlow, president of True North Real Estate Development Limited.

WINNIPEG — The tenants of the $400 million True North Square will be unveiled Wednesday morning.

True North Sports and Entertainment has called a news conference to announce the project’s partners and lead tenants.

The downtown development will include retail, office and residential spaces, as well as a hotel. Space will also cater to outdoor concerts, Winnipeg Jets game day parties, a casual ice rink, Christmas village, ice bar, food truck festival, two curling lanes, outdoor movies, and sand volleyball.

WINNIPEG — The True North Square project adjacent to MTS Centre will receive a combined $17.6 million from the city and province through tax increment financing.

The major downtown development is the second phase of the Sports, Hospitality and Entertainment District, including a skating rink, public stage, public seating and green space stretched over two acres.

“True North Square is an ambitious and visionary mixed-use development in the heart of Winnipeg’s Sports, Hospitality and Entertainment District,” said Mark Chipman, executive chairman of True North Sports and Entertainment.

WINNIPEG — Hatchets have been buried and fences mended for True North Sports and Entertainment to go ahead with the planned True North Square project.

The downtown development is closer to a reality after True North announced Monday it had purchased the property at 220 Carlton Street from CentreVenture Development Corporation. The land is the site of the former Carlton Inn, which has since been demolished.

“The exercise of the option today is a significant advancement of our position regarding the development of True North Square,” said Scott Brown, senior director of corporate communications for True North.

The CEO of True North Sports and Entertainment lashed out at Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman on Wednesday over development plans in the works at the site of the former Carlton Inn.

Mark Chipman said it was with regret that he addressed the media to set the story straight after weeks of allegations reported in the media. Chipman said he met with both Bowman and MLA Kevin Chief after a Winnipeg Jets game in November to show them a video of the proposed True North Square.

Bowman has said recently his office hadn’t received the full details surrounding the $400 million project, including the proposed site located at 220 Carlton Street. Development agency CentreVenture was tasked with finding a tenant for the space, located directly across from MTS Centre.
